Bed Bug Home Remedies

Bed bugs are tiny, reddish-brown, and blood-sucking insects that feeds on the blood of warm-blooded animals including humans. These insects are attracted to their hosts largely because of carbon dioxide, with warmth as the secondary reason.

Certain chemicals can also attract bed bugs. In the past, bed bug home remedies are used instead of insecticides and pesticides.

Prevalence

Bed bugs are commonly found in developing countries. However, in recent years, there is a great recurrence of bed bugs in developed countries. The resurgence is generally ascribed to frequent and greater foreign travels, trading of secondary items like clothes, furniture, etc, less focus on producing more effective bed bug countermeasure, and the increasing resistance of bed bugs with pesticides.

Steam and heat

Bed bugs are able to live comfortably in hot or tropical climates. However, they cannot withstand prolong exposure to extremely high temperatures i.e. 46o C. According to studies, the common bed bug or C. lectularius will die after 7 minutes of exposure to 45o C while most kinds of bed bugs and all stages of life, from eggs to adult stage, will die if exposed to 46o C to 47o C.

This makes heat and steam practical bed bugs eliminator. Use a steam cleaner to wash and clean mattresses, bed linens, carpets, furniture, and upholstery. Most steam cleaners can be set to 120o F, allowing it to kill bed bugs and other pests in less than the estimated 7-minute time.

For clothes, professional bed bug steamers are available in appliances store. Placing clothes and other light fabric in a clothes dryer and spinning it for at least 20-minutes also allows the same effect. If run in 5 minutes, a clothes dryer can generate high temperatures from 120o F to 140o F to 180o F in low, medium, and fast settings respectively.

Mattress Encasement

If immediate relief is needed, a mattress encasement specifically designed to entrap bed bugs is useful. It encases the whole mattress and leaves no place for the bed bugs to escape or enter the case. The same can be done for pillows as well. Since most bed bugs can live for a year without feeding, it is recommended to encase both mattresses and pillows for at least one year to kill the bed bugs residing inside the mattress and pillows.

To ensure that these bed bug home remedies work, prevent bed bugs from crawling from the bedroom walls by keeping the bed away from the wall. Placing each bed post or leg into a small pot or cup with mineral coil keeps them from crawling from the floor. A double-sided tape creates the same effect. Clothes must also be kept away from the bed, so as any other items that could transfer bed bugs to your bed.
